SETTING UP A NEW POND
Step 1 - Select your location in your garden
Step 2 - Select the style and type of pond from City Farmers
Step 1 – Select your location
Your pond should be placed in a location where it will receive between 6-8 hours of sunlight a day. This is sufficient to support fish and plant life, anymore than 8 hours a day will encourage algae growth. Avoid placing your pond under trees, as leaves and debris will pollute the water and the tree roots may damage or move the pond.
You should also consider the location of power and water to the proposed location and also the accessibility to children and pets.
Step 2 – Select the style and type of pond
Once a decision is made on the location of your pond you will need to decide what type of pond you want – anything from a rigid preformed poly or a fiberglass pond, to a flexible pond liner.
Rigid preformed ponds are available in many different shapes and sizes. They also vary in depth and some will have shelves for water plants. The types of fish and plants will also affect the size pond that you will require.
Flexible pond liners allow you to create the shape and size pond that suits you and your garden. Being flexible, they conform to most designs. To calculate the size liner you need, add twice the maximum depth to both the width and length. Remember to allow enough liner to finish off the pond edges.
INSTALLING A PREFORMED POND
1. Place the pond in the desired location and mark out the shape on the ground with a shovel. Dig out the marked area slightly larger than the depth and perimeter of the pond. Remember to allow for the planting shelves where applicable. Compact the base and remove any stones, add a 25mm layer of sand to the base of the hole.
2. Put the pond in place and make sure that the top edge is level – THIS IS IMPORTANT!! Start filling the pond with water and backfill around the pond with sand or soil. Make sure that the sides and shelves of the pond are fully supported with the sand.
3. Once the pond is full, allow it a couple of days to settle before landscaping..
4. Finish off the pond now with edging materials of your choice, including rocks, plants, turf, etc. Remember to allow for the pump cable and tubing for the waterfall if installed and filter. Use a water purifier, and wait for 2-3 days before adding fish or plants.
INSTALLING A LINER POND
1. Mark the shape of the proposed pond using a hose, rope or sand.
2. Excavate the pond ensuring the edges slope into the bottom of the hole. If required create shelves for plants,
3. The middle of the pond should be at least 45-60cm deep for fish, and deep-water plants like water lilies.
4. Remove all stones and roots, and check that the top edge is level.
5. Using liner underlay or sand, put a protective cushion into the hole.
6. Drape the liner loosely into the hole, and start filling with water. The weight of the water will push the liner snugly into position.
7. Once the pond is full, trim off surplus liner, leaving approximately 20mm to hide under the chosen edging material (eg. rocks or pavers). The edging material should overhang the edge to hide any exposed liner.
